3.      Reports:

President.

Another serious accident involving a club pilot has occurred recently. So far this year we have had 3 airlifts out of reasonably benign sites, due to either low hours or long periods of no flying or both. It is well known that you quickly lose your flying skills if you are not using them. If you haven’t flown for a while, it may pay to get a Check Flight in a controlled atmosphere i.e under the guidance of an instructor, safety officer or even an advanced pilot who will check to see that the little things and big things are not lost in the rush to get back into the air. We need to take more care of each other and a simple question of ‘got a flight plan’ or ‘done your hang check’ could prevent a serious injury or worse. If you are standing on a launch and you see a new pilot or know one that hasn’t flown for a long time, just by asking a simple question or two could stop you later thinking “hell I could have said something”. We can all be ’safety officers’, just simple things like running an eye over the glider while the pilot does his hang check. Look for open zips, dive sticks in place, twist in a hang strap, Tension on, or even a correctly fitting nose nappy.  Point out local Hazards etc. The pilot will appreciate it beyond measure if you happen to pick something up that they have missed in the Pre-Flight. It only takes seconds to do instead of years of regret.
